Twenty percent mark. 2021 is also the year with the largest drop in the number of deaths in China’s railway traffic accidents since the former Ministry of Railways was revoked and the State Railway Administration was established.
At the same time, 2021 ended a two-year run of surges in larger accidents. There was only one major accident in the whole year, a year-on-year decrease of 92.31%. Compared with 2019 and 2020, there were 13 and 4 major railway traffic accidents, with year-on-year growth of 300% and 225%, respectively. In terms of energy conservation and emission reduction, the “Announcement” shows that in 2021, the comprehensive energy consumption of China’s national railways per unit of transportation workload will be reduced by 0.16 tons of standard coal/million converted ton-kilometers compared with the previous year, and the chemical oxygen demand emissions will be reduced by 12 tons compared with the previous year. Sulfur dioxide emissions decreased by 10,000 tons compared with the previous year.
